I am thinking of doing a "home exchange" as I want to visit some place wonderful. I live in the beautiful Northern California area, close to San Francisco, in the Wine country. I have a lovely condo that is suitable for a couple. I'll be alone, but looking for romance.
I have been to India, Europe, Mexico, Hawaii, Thailand, and even took a road trip through nearly every state in America.
Hoping to find some place charming and not too pricey.
Any ideas?

Home exchanging works best when you are open to the destination and don't have a specific place (or dates). The more flexibility you have the easier it is to find an exchange.
Join one ore more home exchange websites and see what listings are available. You can search and view the listings even without joining. And most sites allow you to do a reverse search and see who wants to come to your destination. This sometimes will help you determine where to go.

I'm very much converted to the concept of home swapping. I've been on a number of home exchanges over the last 4 years and have had 2 exchanges this year – first I spent 3 weeks in Ontario Canada in the fall and then 1 week in France in September (both were excellent!). I'm already in talks with a couple of people about home exchanges in the new year… really can't wait to get away again! I'm also a single traveler (I'm in my late 40's) and do find that the majority of people, although by no means all, do tend to be families/couples. However this has never been a problem for me… or more importantly them. It's always been the case that for me that so long as both your homes and locations fit the bill then we're pretty much set. I have a 3 bed apartment and so have a little flexibility although the apartment I stayed in Paris in September was a 1 bedroom apartment but it was really perfect for me. I've not looked into too many of the home exchange agencies but I've been a member of Homebase Holidays http://www.homebase-hols.com and have arranged all my exchanges through them. They've always been very helpful whenever I've had any questions and so they do get a big thumbs up from me. I have in fact introduced a number of people to the site through my recommendation. I really do recommend trying a home swap… it's been fantastic for me.
